Are you still using a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitor? The older CRT monitors are not efficient in terms of energy use. If you want a more efficient monitor that uses less energy and space, upgrade to an LCD monitor.

Recycle your old printer ink cartridges if possible. More than 200 million used printer ink cartridges end up in landfills in the United States alone.

Tip 5
If you are considering of upgrading your computer, get a laptop. Laptops use less than 20 percent of the energy that a desktop and monitor system uses. A laptop uses 50 watts while a desktop computer uses 270 watts.

Tip 6
Plug your computer and printer and other device you use with them into a power strip, when the equipment isn’t in use, you can switch it off to make sure that no electricity will be consumed.

Upgrade your lawn irrigation system if it’s quite old because it is likely to waste water. Modern irrigation systems are more efficient in distributing water. You could save 30 to 60 percent by using a smart irrigation system.

If you live in an area where the climate is really hot, you could help you garden’s soil by adding polymers. They help retain moisture for a longer period of time, making the plants and flowers grow more efficiently.

Install a rain barrel to gather rainfall from your roof. Though this is an old idea, it is a good one. You could save on water bills by using this simple idea.

Are you using a motorized lawn mower? Get a lot of exercise and stop unnecessary pollution. Use your heating thermostats wisely. Reduce the house temperature overnight by 5 degrees then turn it up again in the morning and you’ll save a huge amount of money while using less resources. If no one’s around, you could reduce the overall house heating to 55 degrees to prevent the pipes from freezing while also reducing your bills.

When having a house party, you can save a bit on your heating bill by setting the thermostat down. A human body in an enclosed room produces heat that’s equivalent to 175 watts of power.

Tip 2:

Installing a programmable thermostat is also a good idea. It lets you control heating and when properly programmed, it could help reduce closer to 2,000 pounds of greenhouse emissions per year in an average home.

Tip 3:

Installing solar panels may require a good amount of investment but there are so many benefits that you can get from installing one. They work well in areas where there is a good amount of light. Solar panels don’t need hot sunshine to operate. Though you can’t run the entire home on a solar power, it can go a long way towards energy preservation.

Tip 4:

Your furnace should also be serviced annually. The air filter should also be changed if needed. This could help reduce your heating bill and the furnace will run more efficiently. Thus, you save more money in the long run.

Tip 5:

Conserve heat by insulating every part of your home that needs to be insulated. The loft is an important area that needs to be insulated. Heat rises and will keep on rising if your loft is not well-insulated. Also insulate your wall cavities because heat will go wherever it can and not just straight out of your roof. Thus, it’s important to also insulate the sides. Some 40% of heat loss is due to a lack of cavity wall insulation.

Tip 6:

Air returns and heating vents need to be kept clear from any obstructions. Remove furniture and carpets and let the flow go smoothly to increase the efficiency of the system while helping you save money and using fewer resources.

Tip 7:

Whether you’re upgrading your current insulation or you’re insulating from scratch, you might as well consider eco-friendly insulation materials. They are friendlier to the environment than traditional insulating materials. Efficient insulation not only benefits the environment. It can also help you save money in time.

Tip 8:

Drafts can greatly reduce a room’s temperature. Therefore, ensure that all drafts are properly sealed. Install weather stripping to seal loose doors and windows, making them more effective in keeping the heat in and the cold out.

Are you still using single glazed windows? If you are, you need to replace them with double or even triple glazing. Single glazed windows were used many years ago and they’re not really good at insulation.  is very effective at trapping heat in a room or keeping at out during hot summer days. Triple glazing is also even better. Though it may cost a lot when you upgrade, you can save considerably in the long run. Therefore, you may want to consider it as an investment.

Tip 10:

If you can’t afford to upgrade your windows into double glazed windows, there’s a helpful tip that can help. Cover your windows with a bubble wrap. It really works. It can reduce heat loss through the window by about 45% and this is already a good amount.

Tip 11:

Do you have open fireplaces? Insulate any open fireplaces at home but take note that this tip is only applicable to UNUSED fireplaces. UNUSED open fireplaces act as vents for the heat that you’re producing that you might be just throwing away your dollars out of the window each morning. It would be best to use a removable insulating material so you could use the fireplace again when you want to.

NOTE: You need fresh air inside the house. If your heating system does not let fresh air in, make sure that you do at some point each day. If you have sealed the house tightly and it’s well-insulated, install carbon monoxide detectors to let you know immediately if there’s carbon monoxide buildup and that there’s not enough fresh air entering your home.

Most of your appliances at home can still use up energy even when they’re switched off. Thus, always unplug your appliances from the socket after using them. Do this with every appliance you have at home no matter what the manual indicates. It’s easy to plug them in and switch them back on again.

Appliances like TV, VCR, DVD, computer, printer, blender, and etc. may drain a very small amount according to CNN but when you sum it all together, they can account for about 5% of your energy bill and that’s $5 for every $100 you pay. Thus, make it a habit to unplug every appliance at home or better invest in a power strip that can be completely turned off to help save you money and help the environment also.

Tip 2
Winter is finally here and you’re probably set your heating system higher than you need it. Try adjusting your thermostat to one degree and you’ll notice the slightest difference on your electricity bill. If you place the thermostat two degrees lower, you’ll still stay warm. You’ll save a good amount of money too over the winter.

In summer, try turning the temperature control on your AC unit. If the temperature outside is hot at 90 degrees, then an indoor temperature of 85 degrees will make you feel comfortable. You don’t have to set every room in your house at 70 degrees during summer season. Slowly increase the temperature one degree at a time until it feels uncomfortable then set it down about a degree or so and leave it at that temperature.


Tip 3
You can also save water in your shower in many ways. Take shorter showers by using low-flow attachments to your shower head.  You’ll be amazed by the amount of water and energy you can save. A low-flow shower head can help save you around 3,000 gallons of water for every person every year and that’s a lot. You can also install low-flow attachments to your sink taps also if you want to save more money for your family.

Tip 4
Also change your lighting at home. Many people do not think of house lights as appliances but they actually are. Stop using incandescent bulbs or the old standard light bulbs you’ve been using for many years. Change to CFL or compact fluorescent light bulbs.  They use less than 75% of energy and they last longer than incandescent bulbs. They also produce 60% less heat. LED lights are also a good option. Though you may not find them suitable for main house lights, many people prefer using them. They are cost-efficient and they are cheaper than most CFL light bulbs.

Tip 5
One of the reasons why your water bill is skyrocketing is because of leaks. Make sure your water system is free from any leaks because a single steady drip could account for about 250 gallons of water per month and that’s up to 3,000 gallons of water per year! Just imagine the amount of money and water you are wasting. Thus, always check your water system for leaks and you should include this in your home maintenance checklist.

If you don’t have a low-flow toilet, you can improvise. Simply fill up a half gallon of plastic bottle with water and secure the cap firmly. Then, place it inside the toilet water tank. This could help reduce the toilet flush to about 40% but still give you enough water to flush everything away.

Tip 6
During the summer months, use the dishwasher, washing machine, and other large appliances only in the morning or during the late afternoon when it’s cooler. These appliances give off more heat, making your AC work harder if you use them at the height of a hot summer day.

Tip 7
A hair dryer is belongs to the top three power-guzzling appliances. Don’t use a dryer. Instead, towel dry your hair and leave it air-dried.

Did you know that you can also help save the environment by using your home appliances efficiently? The dishwasher is one appliance that uses less energy than manually doing the dishes. Dishwashers are very efficient devices and they use less water than we do when we stand over the sink. Using dishwashers also clean your dishes a lot better. But when using a dishwasher, you need to bear a few things in mind like:

Use the dishwasher with a full load but do not overload it. It will work at its best and provide you with the greatest savings.

Instead of rinsing off the plate to remove food waste with water, scrape it off.

Check the manual and set the dishwasher to the lowest heat level.

Don’t use the rinse function because it could use up seven gallons of hot water. You won’t need it anyway.

Before buying a dishwasher or you want to replace your old dishwasher, make sure it is Energy Star Rated. You could save up to 33% off your bill. An Energy Star Rated dishwasher uses at least 40% less energy than an old dishwasher.

Tip 2
You can also save in your heating bills by setting your water heater to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Reset it lower to 120 degrees yet you still get all the benefits with your heating costs dropping up to 10%. The environment will also benefit from lower energy consumption.

You can also use a tankless water heater because a tank-based water heating system can suffer from standby heat loss because the water tank has to have hot water at all times. But it simply waits for you to need it most of the time. if you don’t need the hot water, the system cycles between heating the water and then waiting for it to cool down to the point where it needs to reheat again.

A tankless water heater only heats up whenever there’s a demand for hot water. Water pipes are directly heated when hot water tap is on and the water keeps on heating until you turn it off. Using a tankless water heater saves you money while reducing its negative impact on the environment.  Though it may be a bit expensive to install a tankless water heater, you’ll get your money back within a year or so. After some time, you can expect up to 50% in savings on your water heating bills annually.

Tip 3
Insulating your entire water system is also one good way of going green and saving money. Insulate your water heater tank using an insulating blanket to save a ton of carbon dioxide emissions. It will help save you money also. Insulate the pipes leaving the tank too.

Tip 4
Your washing machine consumes 90% of energy heating up the water. You can save on energy by using a cold-water detergent and setting it to cold or warm water if possible. If discount rates are given by utility companies during off-peak hours, run your washing machine and other appliances during these times. If all the washing machines in the country use cold water, clothes would be as clean and we would save 1% on carbon dioxide emissions, that’s about 30 million tons of carbon dioxide.

Also use all-natural household cleaning products. You may not know it but the household cleaning products that you’ve been using for years are packed with harmful toxins that may affect your family’s health. Fabric softeners for example, may make your clothes smell clean but they contain damaging toxins that are released into the environment.

Don’t use a dryer and choose a traditional yet budget-free method. Use a clothes line and air-dry your clothes like what your grandmother use to do. This method not only works. It’s free. It doesn’t harm the environment and not a single drop of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gas escape from clothes by drying them on a line.

Tip 5
Another way to save energy at home is to not keep your refrigerator too cold. The ideal temperature of your refrigerator is between 37 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If your refrigerator has a freezer compartment make sure to keep it at 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice buildup can also waste so much money and energy. Thus, you need to defrost it regularly. Also ensure that your refrigerator door seal is working properly. Never leave any food or liquids uncovered inside the fridge. A fridge may have a burning effect on uncovered foods and may release moisture. It will make the compressor work harder, using up more energy and can make your bills shoot up.

Here’s a good example of just how good organic growing can be: If corn and soybeans are planted in organic conditions, 580 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) will no longer be pumped into our atmosphere.

Are you using bottled water at home? If yes, did you know that you could be wasting $1,400 on average per year? What’s worse is that only around 5% of the empty plastic bottles are recycled which means 95% of them und up in landfills!

Instead of using bottled water at home, you can invest in a multi-stage water filter to fit your existing water system. It costs around $100 for a filter and with it your water is safe to drink and will make it taste as great as bottled water. You can save around $1,300 and the environment will feel much better without plastic bottles dumped into the landfills.

You may not be aware of it but the commercial cleaning products that you’ve been using for years are slowly causing damage to your family’s health and poisoning our water system. We dump 32 million pounds of damaging toxins down the drains every year from commercial household and kitchen cleaning products. Think about the damage it could have to our health and to our environment.

If you dine out more often, it’s time to take a break and go for a healthier option. It also helps save you money and the environment would benefit a lot from a little less commercial cooking. Most meals that are commercially prepared not only are costly. They may also contain chemicals and ingredients.  You can save about $100 per month if you dine more at home.

Also cook once and you can divide this into two meals. It’s a great way to save. If your oven has enough space for two chickens for instance, you can roast two at the same time so you could save on energy. It also saves time when you prepare your next meal.

Hate Asparagus? 5 Reasons You Might Reconsider

 

Our last post was on how to make homemade Icecream, so I thought we should probably move onto a post about something a little healthier.

How about asparagus? If you’re like me, you may have thought you disliked asparagus for most of your life. As it turned out, I had never given this delicious vegetable a fair chance. Once you know how to cook it and use it properly it may become one of your favorite vegetables.

Asparagus has always been considered somewhat of delicacy and served in high-end restaurants around the world, but did you know that it has also been used medicinally for thousands of years in Asia?

Asparagus contains a compound known as saponins which are believed to fight cancer and to reduce inflammation.  In addition, asparagus also contains vitamin K and B vitamins, which are vital for proper brain function.

To end up with well prepared asparagus you need to first start of with a quality ingredient.   You should try to get asparagus that is young and tender, but if you can only find the thicker and more woody variety you may have to peel the stocks to get the best result.

Try one of these preparations and see if it changes your mind about asparagus:

  •  One of the simplest ways to prepare asparagus is by steaming it. Simply put your asparagus into a covered pan with around a quarter cup of chicken broth. Set your stove to medium heat and let the asparagus steam for 5 to 6 minutes.  Remove from pan and toss with a couple tablespoons of balsamic vinegar and a dash of olive oil.
  • Try at in sliced asparagus to your favorite pasta dish. Simply peel with a vegetable peeler and give a quick sauté and a tablespoon of olive oil. Not only will this add another layer of flavor to your pasta but it will also provide a bright green punch of color.
  • If you have leftovers various there are a couple of different preparations that you can do. One of my favorites is to add the leftover asparagus to an egg omelette in the morning. If you want to get a little more creative, you can purée the asparagus and make a soup out of it.
  • My favorite preparations is grilled asparagus. You have to be a little careful using this technique because asparagus can get overcooked fairly easily especially if you are using very thin stocks. Heat your grill up to medium-high and cook the asparagus 1 to 2 min. on each side. Once grilled, brush a light layer of all oil and season with Johnny’s seasoning salt.

With all of the above cooking techniques to try and the health benefits that I explained above maybe now is a good time to give asparagus another chance.
